Webster’s Dictionary Online is a freely accessible scholarly digital edition of Noah Webster’s two foundational dictionaries: the Compendious Dictionary of the English Language (1806) and the American Dictionary of the English Language (1828). Together these works, totaling nearly 2,400 pages and 125,500 entries, shaped American spelling, vocabulary, and national identity.
The site is hosted and maintained by the Center for Humanities and Digital Research (CHDR) at the University of Central Florida, which also maintains the companion project Johnson’s Dictionary Online.
