EMURR — the Exhibit Marker Uniform Resource Router — is a combined hardware and software system designed to deliver rich digital information to visitors at physical interpretive sites like cemeteries, museums, science centers, and art exhibits, even where internet access is unreliable or unavailable. Sponsored by Dr. Amy Giroux and Evan Wallace of UCF’s Center for Humanities and Digital Research, the project bridges the gap between a physical location and the digital story behind it. The hardware side packages a Raspberry Pi web server, a router, and NFC tags into a self-contained, locally hosted “tour pack”: a visitor simply taps an NFC-enabled phone against a marker at an exhibit and is instantly shown a web page about what they’re looking at. The software side is an intuitive drag-and-drop web builder that lets staff—without any coding knowledge—create those interpretive pages using text, images, and video, then export them to run on the portable system. Together, the two layers turn any physical space into an interactive, self-guided learning experience, giving cultural and educational institutions an affordable, flexible way to enrich what visitors see with the deeper context behind it.
